Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau announced this morning that she won’t seek a fourth term, likely setting the stage for a crowded field of candidates looking to become just the fifth person to hold the position since the creation of home rule in 1974.
“I have always believed that these positions should not be lifetime appointments. That those in leadership should cultivate others to carry on the work,” Nadeau said in a statement sent to reporters and posted on her personal website. “It’s not easy to step away, especially at such a difficult time for our community and our country. But I do believe that it is the right time for me, for my family, and for Ward 1.”
Nadeau said she intends to endorse a “proud progressive Democrat with a proven track record in government” for the Ward 1 seat but didn’t identify her preferred candidate. “She knows what it’s like to struggle in a low wage job, has fought for affordable housing in our community, and has spent her career focused on early childhood education,” Nadeau offered.
“The endorsement she alluded to here is almost certainly Rashida Brown, a Park View ANC,” WAMU’s senior DC politics reporter Alex Koma tweeted this morning. “I’m not sure that’ll clear the field, though, with so many candidates eyeing this race.”
The partisan primaries for the Ward 1 council seat are set for June 2026, with the Democratic nominee likely to become a prohibitive favorite to prevail in the November general election given the party’s dominance among registered voters and the District’s electoral history.
