Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich is seeking applicants to fill a number of vacancies on the Montgomery County Sports Advisory Committee.

The committee, staffed by Montgomery County Recreation, studies sports participation and opportunities in the County, recognizes outstanding teams and athletes and makes recommendations to the County Executive and the Montgomery County Council. Members advocate for enhanced sports opportunities; help conduct research and address and identify discrepancies found in youth sports to raise the quality of life for residents.

“Sports matter because they give kids structure along with opportunity to learn new skills, create healthy habits and make new friends,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “But not every family in Montgomery County has the same access to fields, programs or equipment, and that’s something we need to keep working on. This Committee plays an important role in helping us understand where the gaps are and how we can improve. I encourage any resident who cares about youth sports, community access or making our system more fair and more responsive to please consider getting involved and serving on the Sports Advisory Committee.”

The committee prepares and submits an annual report to the County Executive and the County Council regarding factors that affect sports participation in the County, including the availability of and access to athletic fields, facilities and sports. The committee also makes recommendations to improve the quality, quantity and variety of sports opportunities and facilities.

Additionally, the committee recognizes unsung sports heroes, individuals or groups involved in coaching, officiating, team management, field maintenance, player transportation, training, equipment donations or any other efforts that promote equitable sports participation in the community.
