Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent Gray announced today that he won’t seek reelection next year, making 2024 the culmination of a decades-long DC government career that included a term in the mayor’s office and another as DC Council chair.
“Our mission will never be complete,” Gray said in a statement. “Our shared desire to make the District a better place each and every day is enduring. I will continue to be an advocate for our city and the people who call it home, but the time has come for me to pursue that as a private citizen.”
The announcement comes two years after Gray suffered a stroke that he’s still recovering from. This past January, colleagues voted — over Gray’s objections — to replace him as chair of the Committee on Health and instead to make him chair of a newly formed Committee on Hospital and Health EquIty.
Even before Gray announced his intention not to run, six prospective candidates had entered the Ward 7 race. The already crowded field includes Eboni-Rose Thompson, who serves as the ward’s elected representative to the State Board of Education and is currently the board’s president.
