DC Attorney General Brian Schwalb signed onto a new multistate lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s suspension of a $7 billion program to bring solar energy to more than 900,000 households in low-income and disadvantaged communities across the country.
Led by the attorneys general of Washington State, Arizona and Minnesota, the court case seeks to reverse the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to end the Solar for All program that was created in 2022 as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. The District was among the jurisdictions to receive grants through the program.
“Congress passed a solar energy program to help make electricity costs more affordable, but the administration is ignoring the law and focused on the conspiracy theory that climate change is a hoax,” Washington AG Nick Brownsaid in a press release about the lawsuit.
The GOP-led Congress earlier this year voted to rescind remaining funds for the program, which the AGs say should have had a limited impact since the bulk of the money had been obligated in 2024 under the Biden administration. But the EPA announced in August that it would no longer implement the program “to remain aligned with Congressional intent” and cited allegations of self-dealing, conflicts of interest, and unqualified recipients.
