A day after President Donald Trump praised Mayor Muriel Bowser and declared that her cooperation with federal officials is boosting her local popularity, a coalition of 100-plus progressive organizations, churches and unions is calling on the mayor to “immediately denounce the attempted federal takeover” and “insist on an end to the federal surge.”
The coalition’s open letter to Bowser described the Trump administration’s actions over the past month as a “clear threat to the people of DC” and decried Bowser’s comments at a press briefing last week as lending credence to federal overreach. The listed signatories included DC for Democracy, EmpowerEd, Free DC, the Washington Interfaith Network and the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.
“History is calling upon you to lead our people, not to cower in the face of an authoritarian who does not have our best interests in mind,” the letter says. “There is no strategy in appeasement, only the reality that the more we give, the more they will take.”
